I trust Rodrigo Duterte because he delivered results that ordinary Filipinos could actually see and feel. Under his administration, free public tertiary education became law, the salaries of the police and Armed Forces were substantially raised, and major infrastructure projects moved forward instead of being buried in endless talk. He took a hard line against illegal drugs, which I believe was necessary to protect the youth, and his government pushed visible improvements in roads, airports, ports, and mass transit. He also ordered the rehabilitation of Boracay after it had become what he himself described as a ‘cesspool,’ backed the rehabilitation of Manila Bay, including the now well-known Dolomite Beach project, and pushed efforts related to the rehabilitation of the Pasig River system. In my view, the NPA insurgency was also greatly weakened during his time in office. For me, Duterte governed with action, not empty rhetoric. That is why I trusted him then, and why I still see his administration as far more effective than what I view as the corruption and weakness of the Marcos administration today.
